People often use the expression, It’s the little things….. We seem to be especially in tune with this expression these days. I just want to add my two cents as it relates to business, managing people, and building new relationships. Quick example: my name is spelled with an “e” at the end. Often people miss it and spell my name without the “e.” To me, this little thing is kind of a big thing. It means you care enough to notice how my name is spelled.
What are the little things that are important to you and your colleagues? Do you know? If you don’t, ask! It could be as simple as making an icebreaker out of it at your next meeting or get together. Let each person share something that may not seem like much but matters to them. Or make a fun game of “know your co-worker,” ask a series of questions to see how well you know each other. Questions could include: spouse/partner/kids/pet names, favorite treat, biggest pet peeve, etc.
Hopefully you get the idea. In business as in life, making note of what is important – no matter how small it seems – really does make a difference.
