Empower Others! Everyone Wins

  • by

What are you doing to empower others? I hear often from managers that they are hesitant to give additional assignments to their team because they feel like they are already too busy and they don’t want to overwhelm them with more work.  They often then take on the extra work themselves.  Two things here:  by taking on the work, managers are not able to focus on the work they should be doing, and secondly, it takes away assignments that may be a new challenge for their staff.  The intent of the manager is admirable but may unknowingly be sending a signal that her/his staff is not capable of doing the work. Managers should start by asking staff if they are willing to take on new assignments.  New assignments create new learning opportunities. It may take more time up front to provide information and support so they can succeed but will be worth it in the long run.

Others quick ideas to empower others:

  • Brainstorm with the team top problems to solve, then ask who wants to take the lead in coming up with possible solutions.
  • Delegate one of your tasks that you have mastered
  • Encourage fresh ideas to create more fun, efficiency, or productivity

There are many ways to empower team members.  Please share what works for you!
