I came across this sign the other day when I was driving through one of our beautiful state parks and it caused me to stop and reflect: How often has my career and personal path taken a re-route? I was having lunch with a dear friend of mine who recently took her own re-route and accepted a position outside of her field of study. She was enjoying it but the new position was proving to be extremely challenging. Mind you, this is a person who thrives on challenges and lives life to the max. In spite of all the new and exciting challenges, her new job was causing her some personal stress. This new trajectory was way off from her planned career path. She has always been motivated by having career and life goals with a plan to achieve each so now that her own trail was re-routed, she wasn’t quite sure what to do. I shared with her some of my own experiences filled with bumps, curves and some pretty large pot holes. One of my other dear friends had given me something to think about when she was experiencing a similar situation. She said, “I’m just going to keep walking and see where this takes me. I trust that I’ll know when I get there.” That insight has served me well. Sometimes all we can do is keep walking and see where it takes us. Have goals – yes – but don’t forget to also live in the present. Learn from what is right in front of us and enjoy the new trail.
