When working with people who are not in a management/supervisory role, I often get asked, “how can I be a leader when I’m not even a manager?” I love this conversation because I believe everyone has the opportunity to shine and to lead. Let me explain….
In today’s world, change, adjustments, re-writing the rules are all commonplace. What was yesterday, may not be today, or even tomorrow for that matter. Each of you have a perfect opportunity to lead:
Lead with a great attitude. When everyone else is complaining, be that person who finds the positive in each change and share it with others. If nothing else, you are leading your own brain to a better path.
Lead with solid feedback. Share productive feedback with those making the changes. It could be as simple as letting them know the positive impact the change is having, or it may be a challenge the change is causing and what can be done to alleviate the challenge.
Lead with new ideas. If you don’t like something, don’t just complain, offer to help find a solution and then do it.
Lead with action. Make things happen. Don’t just sit around doing nothing or paralyzed by the constant changes. It doesn’t have to be big, but do something, try something new, or help someone else.
Leadership is many things and it often starts out with focusing on the little things. What can you do to lead today?
