To Adapt or Not…

  • by

People often ask me, “Why do I have to be the one to adapt my behavior?” To which I usually respond, “You don’t.”  I usually pause for a brief moment to see the look of surprise on their face.  Then I continue, “You don’t if you don’t want to improve the effectiveness of your communication or develop stronger relationships.”  This line of thinking always perplexes me, especially among managers. Improving the lines of communication is such an important skill to have in any environment – personally or professionally.  Understanding that by being willing to adapt your style to meet the needs of others just makes sense.  It leads to improved relationships and increased productivity. Being aware of how your behaviors impact others is the first step.  Start someplace and do!

Tell me how you have adapted – or didn’t.
