Of course words matter. What you say. How you say it. It all matters.
Recently, I have made a slight adjustment in a common phrase used in my interactions with people – specifically when I want to show my thanks and/or appreciation. As I travel and interact with service personnel, I try to sincerely show appreciation for the service provided. I have often said, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” I have begun modifying it to, “Thank you. I appreciate you.” One small word change, somehow personalizes the recognition, in my mind.
I feel that some people have lost a sense of gratitude for the work others do to make things a bit nicer for us. When checking into a hotel, a friendly Lyft driver, receiving good service at a restaurant, a request for towels or supplies from maid service, and even at the convenience store when someone takes that extra step, I use my phrase, “Thank you. I appreciate you.”
The reaction has been surprising. I find people look up and smile at me after I say it. Not all notice, but most do. Changing one little word is making a difference in my interactions. The service business is tough enough already and we know not everyone is kind, so why not share our appreciation in a more personal way?
This expression of gratitude isn’t limited to service personnel. I have incorporated it into my other interactions with people because I truly do appreciate you! Words matter.
Tell me your thoughts – how do you make your words matter?
